BBB Serving Western Virginia issues alert regarding the use of the Better Business Bureau name and Publisher’s Clearing House. Consumers are contacting BBB advising they are receiving calls from a Mr. James Anderson who claims to work for the Better Business Bureau.
Mr. Anderson alleged he was calling about an investigation BBB was doing on the award Publisher’s Clearing House presents to consumers. The telephone number he provides is 876-479-7387. He advises consumers they have won an award and need to send $199 in order to receive the award.
BBB warns consumers this is a scam and one of several we have seen using the Publisher’s Clearing House name. The Atlanta BBB called the telephone number provided and were told they were the “BBB.” When the BBB inquired where they were located they said Washington, D.C. As the BBB pressed for more information, they disconnected the call.
Consumers should be aware that area code 876 is in Jamaica where many scams originate today and calling an 876 number will result in expensive international call rates.
Federal law dictates that no money has to be paid in order to win a prize. Also, the Better Business Bureau would never be involved in such a promotion or call consumers regarding pending investigations. All correspondence from BBB regarding any complaint is sent via email or mail and would never request you call a telephone number out of the country or ask for money.
If you should receive any emails from Publisher’s Clearing House indicating you have won a prize, but need to send money, don’t! Contact Publisher’s Clearing House directly for information at 1-800-459-4724, Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. EST, or visit their website at http://www.pch.com.
